Highbury was built by Joseph Chamberlain, who rose from industrialist, to mayor of Birmingham – and then became a highly significant national politician. His efforts to improve the city of Birmingham can still be felt in the city today…

Chamberlain dominated the city’s political life for more than three decades and by the 1890s Birmingham was known as “the best governed city in the world.”
